Shammi Kapoor, 1931-2011

Famed Bollywood actor Shammi Kapoor died Sunday morning in Mumbai, India from kidney failure at the age of 79. According to his doctor, Kapoor was in critical condition for two days before his death and undergoing dialysis.

One of the ‘head haunchos’ of the famous Kapoor family, Shammi worked in Bollywood films for over five decades, bringing home a host of awards for his work. He starred in blockbuster hits as “Junglee“,”Teesri Manzil“, and “Andaz,” the last of which marked the end of his iconic romantic roles.

A heart throb in his day (often called the Indian Elvis Presley), Shammi was also known for his big heart, lighthearted nature, and devotion to spreading the skill of Internet usage in India when it was a rare commodity. He was founder and chairman of the Internet Users Community of India.

Shammi is survived by his wife, son, and daughter in his immediate family. In Bollywood, however, he leaves behind many who considered him a special addition to their own families.
